Section 4 Summary

Working to maintain a healthy level of self-esteem is vital for our self-confidence needed to take on new projects, manage interpersonal relationships and accept new challenges and risks for personal growth. Although self-esteem may vary slightly from day-to-day, your foundation can be fortified so regardless of any storm, no future erosion occurs.
In an abusive relationship, the management, control and care of your self-esteem is often given away to the abuser. Take back control of your own self-esteem. You are responsible for the level and well-being of your self-esteem.

If you believe you are suffering from domestic abuse know that you are never alone. There are many resources available to help you, and thousands have experienced the pain and suffering you are facing. Recognizing that you are in an abusive situation is the first step.

Actions to Take

  • Honor self-respect and demand respect from others.
  • Review the self-esteem inventory to maintain a target of the person you wish to be.
  • Set self-esteem goals and write out steps to meet your goals.
  • Recognize the warning signs of low self-esteem. If you notice a tendency to gravitate to these beliefs or feelings, take evasive action. If you have medical problems that exacerbate low self-esteem, such as depression, seek professional help to teach you how to move beyond that phase of your life.
  • Love yourself.
  • Identify your best methods to enhance your self-esteem. Put those habits into practice daily.
  • Know your pitfalls. Admit mistakes. Let go of shame. Get back on track.
  • Release fear — it is not of God.
  • Recognize this is the first step of many to a life-long transformation.  Set aside time for daily discussions with God.  Spending time with Him will help you believe you are God’s masterpiece.
